Sealants

Dental Sealants and Cavity Prevention

The chewing surfaces of children’s teeth are the most susceptible to cavities and benefit the least from topical fluoride because of the anatomy of these teeth which has an uneven surface with many grooves.  It is difficult to thoroughly clean these thin grooves with regular brushing, especially after eating sticky sweets.

Sealants are thin plastic coatings which are applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth. They are highly effective in preventing cavities because sugar can't get into the grooves. We use sealants that are BPA-free. On average the sealant’s protective effect lasts approximately 10 years according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. The integrity of the sealants is assessed at the regular six month checkup.
